Univ. President Appointed Bishop
University President Rev. David M. O’Connell has been appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, New Jersey by Pope Benedict XVI. O’Connell will succed the Reverend John Mortimer Smith, the current bishop of Trenton, who turns 75 in June.
O’Connell will serve as coadjutor bishop until Smith ‘s resignation is accepted by the Pope.
The Trenton Diocese serves 113 parishes in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean counties.
O’Connell’s ordination as bishop will take place in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral in Trenton on July 30, 2010. Smith will be the consecrator, assisted by co-consecrators Archbishop John Myers of Newark and Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington O’Connell will become the tenth bishop of Trenton.
